This fabulous film, about a crumbling, ancient hotel in the heart of India, is a must see for any cinema goer that fancies a laugh and likes grand and flawless acting from a star studded cast namely Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith as Evelyn and Muriel; 'Slumdog Millionaire''s Dev Patel as hotel enthusiast Sony Kapoor; 'The Boat That Rocked''s Bill Nighy as Douglas; 'Downton Abbey''s Penelope Wilton as Jean; 'In The Bedroom''s Tom Wilkinson as Graham; 'Dinnerladies''s Celia Imrie as Madge; and 'Waking The Dead''s Ronald Pickup as Norman; Diana Hardcastle as Carol; and Lillete Dubey as Mrs. Kapoor (Sonny's mother). This film is based on the novel 'These Foolish Things' (2004) by Deborah Moggach; and directed by John Madden and produced by Graham Broadbent. The film itself gives the audience a precise taste of what life is like in India for the average man and the average family, as well as provides an entertaining romantic comedy for the viewer. The cast chosen for this feature is very well done in my opinion. I mean, who would say no to a Judi Dench or Maggie Smith flick? Nobody would that's who... Although there are obvious signs of Romantic comedy and Drama, the most dominant genres in the film are Drama and Comedy. The story line entails elements of sociology; religion and general family issues such as finance and debts in the revealing of Evelyn's late husband having many debts which needed to be paid; the realization that Graham is gay and has had a previous relationship with a man that he grew up with in India as well as Graham's death where he is given an traditional Hindu funeral and cremation; as well as Sonny's mother, Mrs Kapoor, worrying about the upkeep and running of the hotel; as well as the many fights that Sonny has with his mother in this regard until it is revealed that all is not lost- Muriel (Maggie Smith) is happy to take over the financial runnings of the hotel, and with the changes that will be made- more guests will come and stay at the hotel, which will create Sonny's income and to provide for his girlfriend, Sunaina, played by Tena Desae.
The cast find themselves invited to stay at the Marigold Hotel in India, and therefore, find themselves thinking that perhaps a holiday to the east wont do any harm as it is one thing on all their bucket lists. However, we find that rocky marriages finally end and new relationships start such as in the case of Evelyn (Judi Dench) and Douglas (Bill Nighy) who was married to Jean (Penelope Wilton) at the beginning of the film.
